Support and Advice During Times of Uncertainty

LATEST NEWS, NELFT Logos, Dark Blue Background

In light of the recent protests and violence unfolding, we understand that many of you may be experiencing heightened anxiety, fear, anger and uncertainty. This is particularly true for individuals who already struggle with mental health issues or those who feel vulnerable due to a physical condition.

We have brought together advice for anyone who is currently struggling and information on what support is available.

Support Available at NELFT

At NELFT, we are committed to ensuring that you receive the care and assistance you need. Here are some ways you can seek help and support:

Talk to Your Care Team:

If you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, reach out to your care coordinator or local health team. They can offer you support to cope with your feelings and adjust your treatment plan if necessary.

Stay Safe:

We are taking every measure to ensure that our staff and patients remain safe at all times and have a zero-tolerance approach to any abuse. However, if you are worried about attending an appointment, please contact your local service and they can assist you with your concerns and, if needed, rebook for another time.

Mental Health Support:

If you currently receive a service from a team at NELFT, such as a local community mental health team (including CAMHS) or psychiatrist, then you can make contact with them directly during office hours, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. If you need urgent help for your mental health,  get help from NHS 111 online  or call  111.

Talking Therapies:

Talking therapies are confidential treatments by fully trained NHS practitioners. They can help with depression, excessive worry, social anxiety, or PTSD. You can self-refer or get a GP referral. Support is available in person, by video, phone, or online.

Emergency Support:

If you are experiencing something that makes you feel unsafe, distressed, worried about your mental health or are having suicidal thoughts, you can now contact your local crisis service by calling: 111 Option 2 for Mental Health or Mental Health Direct on 0800 995 1000. If your condition is life threatening, please call 999.

Taking Care of Your Mental Health

Here are some practical tips to help you take care of your mental health during times of uncertainty:

  1. Be Mindful of Your Social Media Consumption:
    • While it is important to stay informed, excessive exposure to news and social media can heighten negative feelings such as fear, anger and anxiety. Set limits on how much time you spend consuming content and avoid negative ‘doomscrolling’.
  2. Embrace Self-Care:
    • Take time away to engage in activities that you enjoy and that help you relax. This could include reading, listening to music, exercising, or spending time with loved ones.
  3. Stay Connected:
    • Maintain connections with friends, family, and support networks. Talking to others can provide comfort and help you feel less isolated. This can be in person or simply a phone/video call.
  4. Seek Professional Help:
    • It’s important to understand that you do not need to suffer alone. Seek professional help should you need it.

Other NHS and Charity Support:

Those who just need to talk, any time of day or night can access free confidential listening services:

  • Call 116 123 to talk to Samaritans, or email:  jo@samaritans.org  for a reply within 24 hours
  • Text "SHOUT" to 85258 to contact the Shout Crisis Text Line, or text "YM" if you're under 19
  • If you're under 19, you can also call 0800 1111 to talk to Childline. The number will not appear on your phone bill.
