Significant 7+ training for carers in the community
Following the success of the Significant 7+ in care homes, NELFT has extended this training to carers in the community. This aims to empower carers by equipping them with the tools and skills they need to identify subtle signs of deterioration in the people they care for within their own homes. The training is set to have a significant impact on reducing unnecessary admissions to A&E and keeping people out of hospital.
The training was initially offered only to staff in care homes, learning disability and domiciliary teams, but due to its previous success has now been trialed with a group of people from the local community caring for their loved ones at home. The session focuses on empowering carers — who know the 'usual' state of their loved ones best —to recognise early changes in their health that may indicate deterioration. By acting early, carers can take appropriate steps, therefore reducing the need for emergency interventions.
Isabel Robson, one of the clinical facilitators for the Significant 7+ training, highlighted the importance of early identification:
"This training can give carers the confidence to spot early signs of deterioration, which can make all the difference in avoiding hospital admissions. Carers know the person they care for better than anyone, so they are in the best position to notice potential changes. We provide supportive tools that help them recognise these signs and feel more confident in managing the individual's care needs."
Katie, 38, cares for her grandfather. She shared her experience:
"I am so glad I have taken part in the training. It’s given me the knowledge and confidence to understand when something isn’t quite right with my grandad . Before, I would second-guess myself, but now I feel more equipped to take action when needed, which will allow him to remain comfortable at home."
