On Monday 24th February the PCREF team held a Transforming Crisis Care workshop which brought together over 70 colleagues, including mental health professionals, community organisations, police representatives, and expert-by-experience speakers, to address the crucial issue of the use of force in mental health crises.
Chaired by Colin King (lived experience activist and consultant) and Aji Lewis(mother of Seni Lewis) the event was a powerful demonstration of how meaningful collaboration between NELFT NHS Foundation Trust, Project Zero, the Met Police, and users of service can drive systemic change. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the workshop created a space for honest discussions about crisis care, focusing on how to build a more compassionate and effective response.
A key theme was the importance of lived experience in shaping better crisis interventions. Those directly impacted by mental health services shared their insights, highlighting the need for greater understanding, alternative approaches, and stronger partnerships between agencies. The role of police in mental health crises was explored, with an emphasis on reducing the use of force through improved training, de-escalation techniques, and community-led solutions.
The event reinforced the collective commitment to making crisis care safer, more person-centred, and rooted in dignity and respect. By continuing these conversations and taking action, real transformation is possible.
A huge thank you to all the speakers, attendees, and everyone who contributed to the success of the workshop.
