Local dads can join the monthly sessions held by NELFT at Havering Fire Station to gain a better understanding of their children’s emotional wellbeing and connect with other parents.

The ‘Dedicated Dads’ meet-ups are facilitated by the Havering Emotional Support Team (HEST) and cover a range of topics – from practical tips to navigate the festive season to managing stress.

During recent sessions, the team shared ideas to help dads plan around festivities with ease and maintain their children’s and their own wellbeing.

Here are the five top tips they discussed:

  1. Stick to a routine: Over Christmas, kids may stay up and sleep in later. Keeping consistent bedtimes and wake up times can help them feel settled.
  2. Limit screen time: Set agreed limits on device use to encourage family connection and reduce comparison to others' holidays.
  3. Support mental health: Busy holiday schedules can be overwhelming. Plan ahead for breaks or quiet time during social events.
  4. Take care of yourself: Make time for small moments of self-care, like enjoying a quiet cup of tea or coffee.
  5. Prepare for school return: Mention going back to school a few days early to ease concerns and open up conversations.

Kerry Mills, Educational Mental Health Practitioners for HEST, said:

“The Dedicated Dad’s group provides a calm, consistent place for any and all father figures to come together, share experiences and feel able to say what they think and ask for support.”

Whether it’s through exchanging stories, learning practical techniques, or just enjoying a judgment-free space, Dedicated Dads monthly meet-ups are open to all fathers who want to join.

The next meet-up will take place at 6pm-7pm, Wednesday 15th January 2025 at Hornchurch Fire Station, RM11 1SH. The theme for this session will be emotional regulation.
