The inpatient stroke unit provides stroke rehabilitation to patients aged 18 and over who have been diagnosed with a new onset of stroke. The aim of rehabilitation is to improve independence, memory, and re-learn old skills and abilities which have been affected by the stroke.

Rehabilitation goals will be discussed and set with the patients and/or their relatives (if appropriate) with the support from the rehabilitation team. These goals will be the focus of the therapy sessions. Therapy sessions are provided on a 1:1 basis and/or in group sessions. Patients’ family/friends are encouraged to be as involved as possible with the rehabilitation.

Therapy sessions will be provided from Monday to Friday. Nursing care and support is provided 24 hours a day by qualified nurses as well as support workers. The average length of stay on the unit is 28 days. An earlier discharge date may be recommended if the rehabilitation goals set on the unit are reached or they can be achieved at home.

The stroke rehabilitation team provides specialist assessment and intervention and consists of:

• specialist physiotherapists - stroke rehabilitation
• specialist occupational therapists - stroke rehabilitation
• specialist stroke nurse specialists/co-ordinator
• specialist speech & language therapists - stroke rehabilitation
• stroke consultants and doctors
• registered nurses
• rehabilitation assistants

The unit works closely with other acute and other community healthcare providers, local authorities, other voluntary and third sector services.

Opening times: Visiting times are from 11am - 7pm daily and two visitors may be present at any one time.

Meal times for patients are 1-2pm and 6-7pm.
