The wheelchair and special seating service provides assessment and provision of wheelchairs and buggies to the residents of Basildon, Brentwood and Thurrock, based on an individual’s clinical need.

We are a multi-disciplinary team consisting of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation engineers, supported by a team of administrators. We regularly take student therapists on placement.

Our aim is to meet the clinical needs of our clients through provision of equipment to address their mobility issues.

We work to a strict criteria agreed with our local CCG’s - Thurrock CCG and Basildon and Brentwood CCG. A client must be registered with a GP within those areas to be eligible for assessment. Referral to the service is either from the GP, or OT/PT who is known to the client. We are unable to accept self referral for new clients.

Our wheelchair service also offers care and maintenance for NHS prescribed wheelchairs via our approved repairer DGT.

If we are unable to provide the wheelchair you feel you need, we can explore Personal Wheelchair Budgets with you. This has replaced the voucher scheme. It is a means by which we will provide part funding towards the chair you would like but which the NHS cannot fund. The personal wheelchair budget is a resource available to increase people’s choice and control of wheelchair provision.
